Myoglobin Test

Myoglobin is an intracellular oxygen-binding protein, which is present in all types of muscle cells, including the heart. Following myocardial injury or cellular necrosis, myoglobin is quickly released into the bloodstream. Although elevated levels of myoglobin may be detected as early as 1 hour after an Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), myoglobin is most beneficial as a cardiac marker when measured 2–12 hours following an AMI. Myoglobin levels peak at 6 to 9 hours post infarction and return to normal within 24 to 36 hours.
